Details | rachael

1) Students are all required to write a blog post at some point on their journey. It is a graded English assignment that is intended to be an avenue in which they can tell a chapter of their story. The requirements are relatively simple: write well and tell about part of your trip that is important to you. They are unedited by me; it is the writing of the students.

2) Another item to note: in the blog posts of the students you will notice that they refer to me, their teacher, as Rachael. This is a cultural norm here and, as such, becomes an expectation of the students. I realize that in Canadian culture this can be deemed rude, but we are no longer in Canada. In Dominican culture last names are rarely used. These students work with Max and Kina (Canadian missionaries in their 60s), Guido, Ina, Pierre, Rafael and other adults (all older than I) and everyone is addressed by their first name. To be a "Ms." here would set me/us apart and, quite frankly, I prefer being rachael.
