Where We're At | rachael

Folks,

There are just over two weeks left. The group is currently in Sabana from now until next week sometime (likely Wed/Thursday). They will have long construction days as we look to complete a plethora of tasks. At this base wifi is scarce. There are Internet cafes open occasionally so I will check email diligently. Without wifi it is difficult to post blogs but I am working with a local cafe to make this arrangement. I will do my best to arrange email time for the students during their stay in Sabana. This will be the last time they will have access to it.

Our season of visitors is, for the most part, past. Rod Dengerink comes next week so he can climb the mountain with us. Mrs. Schuurman and Mrs. Van Schepen both brought extra mother eyes, life, vitality, hugs, concern and listening ears. Mrs. Van Schepen flew home today (she's in the air now).

Students are doing well. Mrs. Van Schepen had one on one chats with all of the students and each chat was a minimum of one hour, some were 2.5 hours. She spent a good 35+ hours listening to these teenagers share their hearts and thoughts. After talking with Mrs. Van Schepen we know that all students are enjoying it here. There are struggles and concerns, for this is life, but the spirit is good. We worked/are working through any major concerns and I am focussed on, as Kina would say, "finishing strong!"

Last week consisted of teaching rotations, a day of construction at Monica and Mateo's and VSchep chats. Friday was a day away to see the Santo Domingo colonial zone, magnificent caves and the beach. Saturday we spent the day in Cercadillo (what we call Ina's village) and then went to her house for brownies and to buy some stuff that the ladies in the village have made. Sunday was a regular church/mall day.

This week:
Monday: the group left for Sabana for construction. The day to day itinerary is unknown, but it will consist of work, work and more work.

Next week:
Wednesday/Thursday: return from Sabana to Santo Domingo.
Friday: leave for Jarabacoa to go to Rancho Baiguate
Saturday: begin ascending Pico Duarte (the highest mountain in the Caribbean)
Sunday: descend Pico Duarte (and celebrate Marieke's birthday)
Monday: white water rafting

We will return to our base on Monday or Tuesday afternoon.

The following week:
Wednesday: pack up and head to the market and the hotel
Thursday: hotel
Friday: leave for the airport

And that's that! Have a lovely day!
rachael
